New project: Making a game of it…

March 23, 2010

Just a little teaser of my latest hobby and project… building an arcade cabinet!

The sides

I had the pieces cut by troy@arcadeworx.com.au who is one of the most helpful and friendly guys you could ever deal with. He even let me design my own marquee and door as you’ll see in the next few pics.

Yep, that's an L!

... and Death Note will be the theme!

The ‘H’ will be cut-out and I will add the inside pieces of the ‘D, A and O’ to a mesh or perspex backing later. Superb job by the way!

Speaker grills

Nice, simple control panel

The cabinet will hold my media centre PC I showed in an earlier blog and run all the emulators pretty much, which will equate to thousands and thousands of games.

Most of the pieces shown here

I decided to stick with a modern LCD (24″) for the screen, rather than the old school CRT look. I felt the emu’s can add scanlines and effects well enough to give the original look and the widescreen and hi-res will be perfect for more recent stuff like Dreamcast and the odd PC game like Street Fighter 4 for example.

Quick 3 in 1 sealer, primer and undercoat

The cabinet will be a slightly glossy black if things go to plan. I’ve got an idea for some Death Note laminate and possibly even a plexi-glass top for the control panel, but that will be way down the track if it happens.

Spray paint test on some scrap

I never was a ‘bomber’ when I was younger so have no spray can experience but hopefully I’ll manage. While painting the undercoat I kept waiting for Mr Miyagi to come in and teach me some karate…

The garage - where I'll be spending the next few months...

The plan is to get all the pieces painted then assemble it all upstairs, inside. I received the joysticks, keyboard/button encoders and some other little bits today so am just waiting on the buttons, t-moulding and some other stuff. It’s going to be a fun project to work on and even moreso if I can actually pull it off!

We play games to have fun… but playing well is more fun!

Game over: devs can’t spell character name

July 15, 2009

Just a quickie, but was watching the first official trailer for the second Watchman game episode and noticed something I couldn’t pass on.

If you’ve seen the movie or read the comics, you’d know that one of the characters is Nite Owl… note the spelling.

Here’s a frame from the game trailer…

Maybe it's a new character?

Maybe it's a new character?

Not a huge difference but certainly a huge deal and a HUGE fail. Everywhere I have seen, the character is always called Nite Owl and not Night Owl. Spelling mistakes are common (I’m no expert myself) and certainly understandable… in everyday life. But you have to wonder how an official game with the official licence can screw something like this up. Even if it is a crappy, budget title.

A blast from the past: Powered by tech of the present

May 27, 2009

So the Media Centre/Gaming PC has been built and it’s all up and running with the TV, surround system and new entertainment unit, so all that’s left to do is finish setting up all the games and media and sit back and enjoy! I’ve started by playing some old N64 games… in HD on a 50″ Plasma!

Bond, James Bond. Goldeneye 007 to be exact!

“Whoa! HD?! But the N64 was low resolution and even for back then, looked blurry and foggy!” Indeed it was… Read the rest of this entry »

Console Wars

May 1, 2009

Game console wars have probably never been as heated as this current generation. With every man and his dog owning a Wii, Microsoft have been trying all sorts of tactics to broaden their Xbox 360 demographic, Sony have been very honest and patient while still sticking by the claim that their PS3 will be a ’10 year console’ and it seems almost every console owner on the internet is doing the whole fanboy routine of attacking every console they don’t own while defending their own.

What is sad though is when the big companies themselves start acting all fanboyish. Microsoft have looked stupid numerous times by attacking the Wii with claims like it’s not for real or hardcore gamers and it’s not even a gaming console but rather a toy. But it’s not even those childish attacks that hurt them the most. It’s the fact that they are putting their competition down, rather than actually talking up their own product.

Is a cheap crap game still a crap game?

April 29, 2009

So i’ve been thinking about my current PS3 game collection (53 and counting) and how much fun I’ve got in there and just how many bargains I’ve managed to snap up.

Sure there are the must-buys like MGS4 and Killzone 2 for example but I’m sure a lot of people would raise an eyebrow or even laugh at some of the titles.

I can admit, quite a few of them are average and not worth close to the rrp of $100-$110 but if I can get a game for $20-$40 and get some decent enjoyment out of it, then great!

I see a lot of sense or even value to this and am happy with all of the games and their respective prices in my collection.
